Barcelona or Girona: which airport for the Costa Brava?
Two airports serve the Costa Brava. Girona is closer to the coast; Barcelona El Prat has far more flights all year round. Here is how to choose, and what the trip to your town looks like from Barcelona.

The two airports
Distance against choice of flights
Barcelona El Prat
Spain’s second airport, with two terminals and direct flights from all over Europe and other continents, every day of the year and at almost every hour. It is between about 70 minutes (Blanes) and two and a half hours (Cadaqués) from the coast.
Girona-Costa Brava
A smaller airport south of Girona, much closer to the coast. Most of its flights are low-cost routes, with many more in summer than in winter, when the airport’s programme shrinks to a handful of destinations.
How to choose
Three questions to ask
- Is there a direct flight from your city, on your dates, to Girona? Outside summer, often there is not.
- What time does it land? El Prat has late and early flights all year; a late arrival at a small airport leaves fewer options to reach the coast.
- Is the fare difference worth it once you add the trip to the coast for everyone travelling?
From Barcelona
If you land at El Prat
From El Prat we drive you to every town on the coast, at any hour, with flight tracking and 60 minutes of free waiting from the actual landing. Clear-road times: Blanes about 70 minutes, Lloret 75, Tossa and Sant Feliu just over an hour and a half, Palamós an hour and three quarters, Begur two hours, Roses just over two and Cadaqués nearly two and a half. The price per vehicle is fixed and there are no tolls on the way.

What your price includes, and the rules in plain words

The price you confirm includes the luggage you book, and it does not change with traffic. Only extras you ask for on the day, such as an extra stop or extra waiting, are agreed with the driver before setting off.

Girona-Costa Brava Airport is closer. Barcelona El Prat is about 75 minutes away with clear roads and has many more flights.
Does Girona airport have flights in winter?
Far fewer than in summer. Check your route on the airline’s website for your dates before you plan around it.
