Family transfers to the Costa Brava, with child seats
Two hours in a vehicle after a flight is a long time for small children. Here is how we plan a family transfer to the coast, what Spanish law says about child seats, and how to book so the right seats and enough space are waiting for you.

The rules
What Spanish law says about child seats
Spain’s General Traffic Regulations, article 117, say that children 135 cm tall or less must travel in an approved child restraint suited to their height and weight, and as a rule in the rear seats. The trip from El Prat to the coast is on motorways and dual carriageways, so a proper seat for each small child is both the rule and the safe choice. The full text is in the BOE.
How we do it
Seats ready before you land
- Tell us the age (or height and weight) of each child when you book.
- We fit the right seats in the vehicle before pick-up, for a small supplement per seat.
- Count pushchairs, travel cots and large bags as luggage in the search box, so the vehicle has room for them.
- If you prefer to bring your own seat, tell us and the driver leaves room for you to fit it.
The vehicle
Room for children and everything that comes with them
A family of four with two suitcases, a pushchair and two child seats fills a saloon car. In the search box, enter all the passengers, children included, and all the bags: you will only see vehicles that fit. Two families sharing a villa often travel together in a minivan or a Van XL, which is usually cheaper per family than two cars.
The drive is between about 70 minutes (Blanes) and two and a half hours (Cadaqués) with clear roads. If someone gets car-sick, tell us: the last stretch to Tossa or Cadaqués is a road with many bends.
Where families stay
Family-friendly towns on the coast
Flat beaches and easy streets make Blanes, L’Escala, L’Estartit, Roses and Empuriabrava popular with families, and many stay at the large campsites along the coast. For a comparison of every town, read where to stay on the Costa Brava.

Before you travel
Do you provide child seats?
Yes, on request when you book, for a small supplement. Tell us the age of each child so we fit the right seat.
Is a child seat compulsory in Spain?
Yes, for children 135 cm tall or less, under article 117 of the General Traffic Regulations.
Can we bring our own child seat?
Yes. Tell us when you book and the driver leaves room for you to fit it.
Do children count as passengers?
